What You Need To Know About Using Mobile Broadband Technology

Over the last 10 years, internet access speeds have increased dramatically. Now, of course, you are also able to have broadband speeds through devices connecting to the internet through mobile phone 3G connections. It's simplicity is one of it's major advantages. A 'dongle' must be connected to the computer whether it be a desktop, laptop or netbook, then the installation process takes place either with the operating system's own default files or with the dongle manufacturer's supplied files, and that's it! In contrast to a home broadband ADSL setup, there's no ISP settings to enter, no routers to configure, and no fiddling around with security settings. You just put the SIM card into the dongle and plug it into your computer. Dongles aren't the only mobile broadband device though - other ways to access mobile broadband include: mobile data cards, phones with data modems, USB modems and laptops with mobile broadband capabilities built-into them. Keep in mind that mobile broadband is not the same as WIFI. It's 3G, which is a different technology altogether. With WIFI you connect to the internet via a wireless access point, which means that you have to be within a very short range of a wireless 'hot spot'. Mobile broadband on the other hand works anywhere that you can get a mobile phone signal. 3G quite literally means the third generation of mobile phone standards and technology. It enables network operators to provide a wide range of advanced services via the mobile network, such as wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls and broadband wireless data. Listed below are the advantages of using 3G mobile broadband technology:

Convenience and portability - Mobile broadband is very convenient to use. You can connect to the internet from any location so long as you have a device with mobile broadband capabilities, a computer and a network reception.

No land line necessary- Although internet speeds through a fixed land line are fast, they do not have the mobility of a 3G connection. It could be possible in the future for everyone to be receiving a 3G connection to their homes, thus nullifying the use of a fixed line.

Flexibility - You can use a mobile broadband dongle on as many different computers as you please. You could use it on your work laptop during the day, pop it into your computer at home in the evening, or lend it to a friend or family member who doesn't have internet access.
